Distant shores and the islands will see                                                                                                 Your light, as it rises on us

lyrics from You Said – Hillsong

The first time I sang those lines I was a freshman in college and going to the distant shores and islands was not even a thought let alone a reality.
I remember the following year singing it around the World Showcase in Epcot thanking God for the nations and praying one day I would be closer than those pavilions.

So here I am on a ship which set sail from the Canary Islands to South Africa and on to Madagascar. “Distant shores and the islands will see your light as it rises on us.”  Never before have those words rang more true for the Africa Mercy.  We spent two weeks in Cape Town, South Africa opening the ship up to the public letting people see what it is that we are doing and what God is doing through us.  Men, woman and children were able to walk through the hospital and not only see it but hear stories of lives being transformed spiritually and physically.  One man said of a little girl’s physical transformation “that is what the Lord did in my heart.”  Cape Town is about as distant as you can get in Africa and the shores saw the light of God shining through our ship.

Now we are here in Madagascar and I can sing “the islands will see” knowing I am part of that.  I didn’t know anything about Madagascar before learning the ship would be coming here. Since then I have come to find out that it is a beautiful nation full of unique flora and fauna and wonderful, friendly people.  However, it is also a poverty stricken, hurting nation that desperately needs both the medical and spiritual care this ship can provide by the grace of God.

I am grateful beyond words to be part of Mercy Ships at all but am excited to be part in this stage of time that the lyrics of that song can be sung literally.  God has had a plan for me and for this ship and has known all along that we would end up here in Madagascar in His perfect timing.  I look forward to the year ahead and am excited to see what God is going to do on this Island.

You Said – Hillsong

You said, “Ask and you will receive
Whatever you need”
You said, “Pray and I’ll hear from Heaven
And I’ll heal your land”

You said, Your glory will fill the earth
Like water, the sea
You said, “Lift up your eyes
The harvest is here, yes the Kingdom is near”

You said, “Ask and I’ll give the nations to you”
Oh, Lord, that’s the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see
Your light, as it rises on us
